This was taken in roughly the same location as yesterdays photo. I haven't seen the procedure here but usually these baskets are used to contain the chickens after they have been stabbed with a long needle. After being stabbed they are left to flap about underneath this basket. I have heard many stories from my friend Rita of how they had chickens in back of her house when she was a child. When it was time to eat chicken her mother would simply go in the backyard, grab a chicken, break it's neck, and proceed to clean and cook it. It's all a bit much for me and tonight I think I will be eating vegetarian.
It's interesting walking around this old part of Hsinchu for if nothing the reactions of the people when they see me. There are some genuinely warm smiles from strangers, allot of indifference, some hostility, and some "oh my God there is another funny looking lao wai". I felt at times like an interloper and by the reaction of one man it would seem I was. A man with a "brick short of a load" was walking down this alley quite intently, staring at me as he walked, with a disturbed look on his face. When we met he tried hard to make sure we made body contact. Luckily we missed as I performed my neo like moves to avoid this marauding idiot. For those of you not from the Maritimes, "brick short of a load" is a phrase used to describe those people of limited intellect - stupid, idiot, retarded might be more succinct but I like this phrase better.
