A store display on an alley near FE'21 in downtown Hsinchu. I have mentioned many times how I love the narrow alleys in Taiwan's cities. Much like sidewalks in cities elsewhere Hsinchu's alleys are great to explore and if you have your wits about you not so bad for walking.
I went to HICA's annual Christmas dinner this past Friday. Good turkey and ham but a bit light on the vegetables. Someone commented that perhaps they felt foreigners only eat meat - well there was lots of that. I enjoyed the meal and would certainly recommend the Royal Hotel if you are up for a buffet style night out. I'm rather a slave to my moods and that night I wasn't feeling that sociable. At the best of times socializing doesn't quite come naturally for me so Friday night was a quiet one for me.
Unfortunately this is likely the last year for this event as HICA has been disbanded. Apparently Taiwan's incredibly thick and inconsistent bureaucracy played no small part in it's demise. But no doubt a noticeable lack of interest in the organization by those it was meant to serve, the foreign residents of Hsinchu, played a big part. It seems difficult to get the foreign residents together to form an effective community.
