Fast Food. Hsinchu, Taiwan

It was a stand like this that fueled a 6 month long odyssey of weight gain when I first came to Taiwan 8 years a go or so. The fried chicken was good, too good, and too convenient. I love this part of the culture here - the entrepreneurial spirit and the convenience of so many things (other things are a complete pain in the ass). Small city Canada or the suburbs which so many people love don't have the population density that allow for any kind of an emulation of this Taiwan experience. Everything is spread far and wide with the car as an absolute necessity to accomplish anything. This lack of density requires any attempt to open a small storefront or restaurant have a sense of seriousness you don't see here. Here restaurants come and go, large and small they are everywhere. What this means for me is a sort of cornucopia of choice and the desire to sample it all before they disappear. I've settled down now and so has my waistline but when I eventually leave this Island I think I will forever miss the abundance of cheap interesting food. The Canadian desire to have the exact same restaurants in every city and country they visit is complete boredom to me, especially when their palette never expands beyond burgers and fries.

The convenience of eating here is certainly wonderful and quite allot of wonderful places to choose from.

As far as restaurants go my favourite place would be Bangkok - so much to choose from but unfortunately usually hard to get to.
