From time to time I participate in a number different photo theme sites, primarily PhotoFriday, and a few others. This photograph which I took this past Saturday seems to fit well with the food theme at the Thursday Challenge (why do all these sites name themselves after a day of the week?).
This was taken in the old market area of Hsinchu. I often go to this part of the city in search of something gritty and urban. The market seems to be quite underutilized except for those driving scooters who use it as a short cut - they don't care much for the people who might be in their way either. It's butcher shops like this that remind me to always order all my meat well done. It's not the "rustic" look of the place or even the fact that the meat is stored all day with no refrigeration. It's the slaughtering, cleaning, and butchering all done in close proximity (mostly chicken shops do this now - obviously not much room for a cow in there) . It must be a recipe for some kind of disease.
Thats not to say that this market is some kind of horror show. It isn't. In my travels around Asia I have seen markets far less sanitary - I still remember the rat I almost walked on top of in a market in Thailand. I'm sure it was eating dogs as it's main diet, it was that huge. The butcher shops in Kathmandu had blood strewn everywhere or that may have been the dentist - they looked alarmingly similar.
