I am attracted more by the red typography than the actual subject itself. These little street side stalls represent Taiwan to me as much as anything else. When I first moved to Taiwan almost 8 years ago I remember marveling at the fact that there were "restaurants" everywhere. Shortly after arriving I phoned family back home exclaiming that there were tiny Chinese food restaurants everywhere you looked - a rather simpleton observation but an accurate reflection of Taipei. Opening some form of food business must be the most popular business activity here.
"To the Chinese people, food is like the very 'air' they breathe (some times this analogy is too close to reality), thus the preparation and eating of food is a chief preoccupation. The quantity and quality of their daily meals is analogous to the quality and success of life collectively." (hat tip)
Nothing beats the convenience the convenience and adventure of eating here.
Michael Turton has an excellent introduction to eating Taiwan complete with a great deal of photos. Visit his introduction simply titled "food".
