Ladies on Parade. Hsinchu, Taiwan

Some smiling ladies at the end of their short march in Hsinchu's Double Ten's day parade.

Double Ten refers to the 10th day of the 10th month, and commemorates the overthrow of the Manchu Qing dynasty by revolutionaries on October 10, 1911. It is an important national holiday in Taiwan (it seemed to be treated with indifference in Hsinchu).
The following short history has been copied on various sites and I have no idea of the original source.

"Although the official founding day of the Republic of China is January 1, 1912, the events on October 10, 1911 are considered the spark that brought down the Manchu dynasty and led to the establishment of the Republic of China.

October 10 commemorates the Wuchang Uprising, that signaled the Chinese people were fed up with the Manchu court. When people in the Szechuan Province found out that their railway company -- built by the Chinese, for the Chinese, with hard-earned Chinese money -- had been sold to a foreign consortium, they rioted.

The government tried to suppress the rioters and restore order. However, an accidental bomb explosion precipitated a revolt on October 10. Troops mutinied, and within a month, 15 provinces had declared their independence from the ruling Manchus, causing their downfall. "
